Can I add "I don't"? When I did as a child, it was zig-zag out.
Zig-zag in
Zig-zag out
... This what I mean by "curved flat edge" on my previous message, in order to lay comfortably against the scalp :

Opted out of the friends program, nothing personal
Growing up, I used to do zig zag out. However, I realized that would end up zigzagging that area of my hair after taking it out, so I began wearing it zig zag in. That way, even if it crimps my hair, it'll be hidden well within my hair and the outwards area will still look normal/like the rest of my hair.
There needs to be a 3rd option. I HATE bobby pins, don't use them, but I had to vote in order to comment.

I don't and have hardly ever used bobby pins throughout my life, but zigzag out was always the most natural way to put them in and the way I saw others wear them. I remember years ago learning it was supposed to be zigzag in and my mind being blown.
That's a great answer
.
I used to be zig zag out, now I'm zig zag in!
They stay put better that way in my slippery hair.

Zig zag in works best for me!

Hmm I don't use those but my grandma always wore some. Her bobby pins were straight on both sides (no zig zag). I wonder if it's a Chinese thing.
It could be, because I think I've seen the straight kind most often at the beauty-supply stores run by Asians (Chinese, Korean) selling a lot of Chinese-made goods. I prefer that kind as well, if I need bobby pins (often actually for holding headscarves. More gentle to both my hair and the scarves).
Putting it in my signature because I have to say it so often:
Do what works for your hair, not what other people say is "right" or "wrong." If it works for you, it's not wrong. If it doesn't work for you, it's not right.
